Why automate tweets? Well the obvious reason is that it saves time; you can keep providing value and putting your ideas out there without having to compose a tweet real time.
But the other reason to automate twitter is because Twitter is a dying social media network (in terms of marketing and promotion returns on time and investment).
Because it’s a dying network where returns are negligible, you should try and reduce the time you spend on promoting your brand via Twitter, and automation allows you to do that.
You don’t need a ton of tools, I use just 2. There are also 2 really cool tools I use to do ALL of my Twitter automation.

Oh, by the way, automation of Twitter doesn’t mean you’re absent, of course you can create ad-hoc tweets and manually reach out to people mentioning you (replies) and digest other peoples content, but automation will mean you ALWAYS have a presence, even if you go into Twitter to get value just once a week (or less!)
